Saturday, August 11, 2018, Spearfish City Campground

We found the Spearfish City Campground to be very nice even if it was a bit pricey. Spearfish Creek was only a few feet from our campsite providing a pleasant babbling background sound throughout most of the park. There was plenty to explore as Sam and I made our daily outings. The D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery was adjacent and we walked all around the very pet-friendly facility several times during our stay (more on that in a few days).

A paved trail, part of a citywide network of walking paths, circled a conspicuous humming I heard in the woods. The hum was from a power plant built in 1911 to support the Homestake mining operations. Water from Spearfish Creek was diverted upstream and routed through some sizable pipes to spin waterwheels to generate electricity. Apparently, it is still in operation today.

I will easily be able to take Sam on a different route each day while we are here to keep him from getting too bored.
