Friday, February 1, 2019, Move to Pismo Beach, CA

Today's drive was not lengthy, 168.9 miles (91,805.0 total) but it took us four hours because of hills and curves. Since we started at Tehachapi, CA, it was downhill for the first 20 miles of highway 58. When we headed west on 223, it was more downhill and curves for another 20 miles.

Then the roads became straight and level through the valley before climbing again on highway 166 over to the coast (about 2500 feet up and 3000 feet down on some winding, narrow, but surprisingly smooth road). Highway 166 was closed due to flooding the day before we were scheduled to drive it, so we were lucky it had been re-opened.

I do not know why there were so many oranges on the ground. My theory was the rain storms over the previous few days had something to do with the situation.

You can say what you will about California, but there is no doubt about the beauty of this state. We loved the color in the hills/mountains on our drive.

We pulled over along highway 166 just a half mile from highway 101 and the coast. We were cautioned not to arrive before check-in at two o'clock or we would have to wait. Since we were just a little early, Joani thought we could wait along the countryside road rather than some parking lot. This entire herd of cows ambled over to see why we stopped - maybe they thought it was dinner time.

Our timing could not have been much better - we parked at the curb at 1:59! I unhooked the car while Joani checked us in and we were settled into site 146 by 1:30. By 2:00 we were enjoying our first hike along the beach boardwalk when we were caught in a quick shower. No worries - a light rain couldn't dampen our spirits as we had been looking forward to our Pismo Beach visit for more than a year.
