Tuesday, August 20, 2013, Rialto Beach, Olympic National Park in Forks, WA

We had originally thought that if we ran out of time we could skip seeing the coastline.  We are certainly happy we chose to stay longer in Forks, WA! We drove to Rialto Beach (about 15 miles), part of Olympic National Park. The parking lot was right at the beach, so we were immediately treated to fantastic views. Driftwood on this beach should have another name - we walked by "driftwood" that was 8 feet in diameter and hundreds of feet long!

Mist carried by the ocean breeze and the sunlight through the giant trees created a fantastic world we had not seen before.

The beach was covered with stones of all sizes which were segregated by the waves into different areas. Some places were covered with very fine sand. Other areas were covered with small pebbles while other areas were covered with still larger rocks. People obviously had fun stacking stones.

The famous "Hole-in-the-Wall" rock was two miles from the parking lot, but we barely noticed the time. There was a very primitive trail that led up and over the headlands to the other side of the hole in the wall. From above the view was spectacular!

At a few places along the beach, we heard the waves tumbling the rocks into each other. It was easy to understand why all of the rocks on the beach were smooth and round. The ocean was just like a giant rock tumbler.

Joani found herself on the wrong side of a tide pool when the tide came in. Rather than getting her shoes wet, she opted for a log she could cross. It had an obstacle midway but she handled it pretty well.
