Friday, Mar 15, 2013, Preserve Astro Pad, Kissimmee Prairie, FL

We did a three-mile hike on the Prairie Loop Trail (Kissimmee Prairie Preserve, FL) with Sam. Started too late to spot much wildlife.

We invited Jon (one of the astronomers) over for dinner - chicken enchiladas. Viewed the comet again at sunset (actually got a picture of it although it is pretty sad). There were 6 or 8 Americorp folks who work in the park who came out to see the comet also. I think most everyone was happy they had made the effort. Two new astro guys had set up for the night. Bob had a 10 inch Dob and Jim had a 22 inch Dob. It was not quite as cold and, of course, with a 22-inch scope available and an owner willing to share the view I lasted until 11:30. Jupiter was so bright it took a while to re-dark adapt after a peek. The moons seemed very odd. Three were in a line but the fourth was nowhere near the same line. It appeared to be closer to the lower limb and very close to Jupiter. I don't know if it was going in front of or behind Jupiter. The red spot was visible. I couldn't even guess how many galaxies we viewed. I still enjoy the globular clusters the best. Jon continued to have issues with his guider so he was unable to image.

Just for reference, that is a 22 inch primary.
