Friday, November 15, 2013, Low Tide at Shell Beach, CA

We visited the tide pools at Shell Beach, CA, again. It was low tide, but it wasn't really very low - just about average. It must be quite a sight when the tide is a few feet below normal, but we won't be here when that occurs. Joani found the Sea Hare in its usual place. Clearly, it does not move around much or there is something about this particular rock that makes it home.

I decided to call this "sea spaghetti." At first, I thought it was fishing line or maybe silly string, but a closer look revealed it was some kind of plant. There were little chloroplasts inside a clear, gelatinous body about the diameter of regular spaghetti.

The tide pools are home to several types of crabs, but I didn't see a lot of movement. Usually, all it takes is a shadow crossing their path to freeze them in their little claw tracks, so I may have frightened them. It was also a bit cooler (maybe 62-64 degrees), so maybe they were holding out for warmer water.
