Visiting the tide pools at low tide has become one of our favorite diversions. There is easy access to the best tide pools close by in Shell Beach, CA. Turn on Windward Ave. towards the ocean (heading north from Pismo, it is the 6th left off of Hwy 1 past Dinosaur Caves Park). Usually, there are only a few other people exploring, so you have plenty of solitude as you climb over the rocks. Wildlife abounds for viewing, but you have to be patient. Sometimes you can look at a pool for a few minutes before you finally notice all of the little animals moving around. That being said, on this day it was near high tide, so we just enjoyed the view from the cliff top.

Follow Windward Ave and it takes you to this beautiful dog-friendly area.

There were a couple of people learning to paddleboard. I don't think I understand the attraction. It looked like a lot of work with none of the thrill of regular surfing.

The newbies had a lot of trouble with balance. Sometimes they just fell without doing any paddling at all. You can probably pick out the instructor in the picture below.
