We sat around all morning waiting for the temperature to get into the 40's before venturing outside (except for Sam's early walk when he doesn't seem to notice the bone-chilling cold). I decided we would just reconnoiter the Kolob Canyons area of Zion National Park, UT. The Kolob Canyons Visitor Center was an easy drive, only 6 miles south of our campground, Red Ledge RV Park, in Kanarraville, UT
From the entrance, there is only one road. It is 5 miles long and leads to an overlook/turn-around.
There are only three trails. Kolob Arch from the LaVerkin trail is probably too long for us (15-mile round trip). It leads to one of the world's largest freestanding arches and I'm sure it would be well worthwhile if we find the courage for such an undertaking. The Timber Creek Overlook Trail is pretty short (1 mile) from the overlook area. The last one looks just right at 4 miles round trip. It is the Taylor Creek Trail which passes two homestead cabins to the Double Arch Alcove. Coincidentally, our neighbors were parked next to us at the trail-head parking lot. They hiked the trail, so I asked them about it later. They heartily recommended the hike - I'm sold.
We quickly realized pictures of everything in this part of Zion would benefit from late afternoon lighting. Unfortunately, we were here at the wrong time of day; fortunately, it is so close we will be able to return several times to find just the right lighting.
Knowing we would be back and feeling a bit peckish, it was time to head up the road to Cedar City, UT, for some Dickey's Bar-B-Que and then a quiet evening back at the coach.
