Tuesday, January 1, 2019, Move to Sunflower RV in Surprise, AZ

Moving day had me torn between the thrill of getting back on the road and the melancholy of leaving a place and people we enjoyed so much. Of course, we just traded one CalAm park for another as we traveled 57.0 miles (91,061.6 total) to Sunflower RV Resort in Surprise, AZ.

It was a mighty cold morning with temps nearing the mid-thirties. Definitely not what people were expecting when they drove south to Phoenix. The hoses were a little stiff but we got everything stowed and verified the new bike rack had plenty of clearance before we hit the road. Traffic was heavier than I expected for New Year's Day but our drive went without a hitch.

At Val Vista, they were expecting around 100 RVs to arrive on this day and I thought it might be the same at Sunflower. Instead, we were the only one checking in and had no wait. We were settled in by 11:30 and ready to explore our new surroundings.

We are facing the mighty Agua Fria River. Well, it's mighty during the monsoons, but right now it is dry as a bone.

They certainly had some very nice facilities at Sunflower. Sam and I checked out the dog park first. He told me "that'll do pig" as he blended in with the pack and made some new friends.

This tiny hummingbird was hunkered down against the wind and cold. He sat there on the fence keeping a wary eye on us as we passed within a few feet.

Later, we toured the woodshop and found it to be extremely well equipped even if it was a bit smaller than the shop at Val Vista. I still had nothing that required a woodshop but it's nice to know it's there if I ever think of something. The jacuzzi and pool complex looked good and I was surprised to find a steam room! We tried the jacuzzi and the steam room later in the afternoon and I gave them both two enthusiastic thumbs up.

  1. We've stayed in those spots along the ridge before. I saw coyotes out there a couple times. Our dog enjoyed the Sunflower dog park too.
