Thursday, June 13, 2013, Sylvan Lake, Custer State Park, SD

We drove to Custer State Park in Custer, SD, which was only about ten miles from our campsite at Heartland RV in Hermosa, SD. On the way, we saw this beautiful field of wildflowers.

Just inside the park, we found our first herd of Buffalo. Lots of newborns, but no really big beasts. We later found that the males wander off from the heard to avoid the drama with the kids.

This guy is probably 50% larger than the females but still quite young.

This lookout was at just over 6,000 feet - what a spectacular view!

Sylvan Lake was very unique - closing a small gap in the rocks in the background of the picture below formed a dam that created the lake.

There's a walkway along the top of the dam - see the rusty railing?

Further along the Needles Highway, we found the "Eye of the Needle" formation. There was quite a traffic jam at this point since it was at the entrance to a one lane tunnel carved into the rock.

This would have to be disturbing if it was your tent!

They have some very strange clouds here in South Dakota.
