Time to say adios to Bakersfield and head east to the coast. Our route to Pismo Beach included a lot of back roads, but the drive went very smoothly. It was a short 135.3 miles (5,356.0 trip/64,837.1 total) that took about 3.5 hours.
This building on the way out of town (an old power plant) was scheduled for destruction many years ago, but the demolition went badly (bystanders were injured) and now the condemned structure is too hazardous to approach. So, I guess California has determined it should just rust in place. Should be gone in another thousand years or so.
Very pretty, if somewhat desolate, scenery on the drive over to the coast.
As you might expect, Pismo Coast Village RV Resort is right on the water. Our site was no more than 50 feet from the dunes. At high tide, the sound of the surf crashing on the shore sounded eerily close. There were no pet restrictions on the beach (other than the usual leash and clean-up requirements), so Sam got to romp in the sand. It was very dry, loose, almost powdery sand that made it a bit of a challenge climbing over the dunes.
Apparently, you can park on the beach, but I think we are close enough and I would rather not get all that sand in the car.
Joani kept pushing to walk all the way to the cliffs, which must have been at least a 3-mile round trip. The exercise was certainly good for us - we have not been doing as much hiking as we should lately. What a pretty and varied coastline! Joani had lots of good memories of trips here growing up.
This little hummingbird was working some flowers when we interrupted him, so he took a break. Joani zoomed in and then cropped to get the 2-inch bird at rest before he darted away.
