Monday, October 21, 2013, Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach, CA

I had a bit of Divine inspiration early in the morning which led me to check a fuse on the control board of our broken Norcold fridge. Sure enough, it was blown and a quick replacement got everything working again (still in back-up operation mode waiting for the new thermistor). I cannot adequately convey the feeling of relief, no longer fretting over getting that fixed.

We took a long walk on a very nice boardwalk in the dunes next to the beach. The walkway starts, very conveniently, about a quarter mile from our site.

Along the way, we passed the Pismo Beach Butterfly Grove. Apparently, it is one of the major stops along the Monarch Butterfly migration route. We were lucky enough to be here as they gather to overwinter (late October until early March). Since it was early morning, maybe 55-58 degrees and foggy, there was not much activity. We opted to come back later.

Shot with my little Sony early in the day. David did much better capturing them later in the day (see below).

Our site is also very convenient to Grand Avenue in Grover Beach - pretty much their main street with quite an array of shopping and dining. The Amtrak train stops at this station a couple times a day on its trip between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Later, we headed back to the Butterfly Grove. I drove since I took my heavy tripod and the William Optics telescope. This was the first time I used the telescope as a camera lens. I was pretty happy with the results.

David is using his William-Optics ZenithStar80mm Semi-APO Refractor Telescope on his camera. Not something you want to carry on a hike.

The butterflies clustered 30 to 40 feet, or more, overhead so the telescope (480 mm focal length) worked out well. We really liked the contrast between open and closed wings. We will visit again another day when it is a bit warmer still.
