Sunday, December 8, 2013, Palomar Observatory Closed Due to Ice, Palomar Mountain, CA

The rain had ended on Saturday in Lake Skinner Park, Winchester, CA, and the clouds were starting to clear early in the morning providing some nice dramatic skies.

It doesn't look like it, but it is cold!!!

This park is home to the annual Temecula Valley Balloon and Wine Festival, so it should be no surprise that there were hot air balloons drifting overhead nearly every morning.

On this morning they actually ended their rides in the park, so we were able to watch the crew retrieve and stow the balloons for transport on their trailers.

We checked the internet and found the Palomar Observatory was scheduled to be open from 9:00 to 3:00. Some people try to visit all of the Baseball Parks or Football Fields - I think I will try to visit all of the observatories in the country (at least as long as Joani will indulge me).

This is the most breathtaking part of the drive.

Above 5,000 feet elevation, Saturday's rain was still ice and snow on the ground. The roads were impassable and the observatory was closed. That's when we figured out there must be another way to get up to the minute road closings before heading out - of course, there is a number to call! The ice made for some very nice photo opportunities, but we were not really dressed for the cold, so we had to just get out of the car for a few minutes at a time.

We had been looking for a Post Office all week and at the place where we were turned back by ice, there was a convenient letter drop. Sometimes you wonder in these extremely out of the way places if letters will really get delivered, but nothing is supposed to stop the Post Office so I'm sure the letters will go through.

Back in Temecula, we found a nice off-leash dog park for Sam. There were five separate sections and lots of dogs. Sam actually did a few seconds of running before we went home to settle in for the night.
